Description:  The position will require a variety of environmental sampling and reporting functions in support of site investigation, remediation, and regulatory compliance assignments supporting various clients in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The work will range from directing drill rigs for green infrastructure investigations in New York City, general field support during multi-media sampling (i.e. soil and groundwater) and preparation of reports for sites undergoing investigation. Position requires strong skills and knowledge of MS Excel and Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access and Adobe Acrobat. Experience with AutoCAD, Microstation and/or ArcGIS products a plus.

Job requires:  BS or higher degree in Engineering, Geology, or Environmental Sciences;  5-7 years of experience.

Overview

The American Wind Wildlife Institute (AWWI) seeks a coordinator for AWWI’s American Wind Wildlife Information Center (AWWIC) project. The AWWIC is a database that collects and securely houses wind-wildlife data from wind projects across the U.S. and makes the data available for scientific analysis. The analysis of data contained in AWWIC represents the most substantive, near-term opportunity to deliver game-changing information on wind-wildlife interactions.

This position will report to AWWI’s Program Manager and be supported by the Director of Research and Evaluation.

AWWI works closely with more than 30 industry and conservation partners, friends, and advisors to build scientific research, strategies and tools, and best practices for environmentally responsible wind farm siting and operations. Carrying out AWWI’s mission requires dedication to sound science and collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

The AWWIC Project Coordinator’s primary day-to-day responsibilities for coordinating and managing AWWIC include, but are not limited to the following:

•        Manage ongoing and future data contributions to AWWIC; conduct data QA/QC and work with data submitters to prepare complete datasets for upload into AWWIC
•        Maintain and update content of AWWIC Documents Database and other database user portals; respond to user inquiries as needed
•        Understand and develop templates for data collection that are in-line with the most up-to-date field techniques and research
•        QA/QC wind-wildlife data collected from public sources for inclusion in AWWIC
•        Data aggregation and analysis for use in scientific presentations and papers
•        Collaborate with contracted computer programmers on database development and maintenance
•        Support preparation of outreach materials on AWWIC, such as talking points, fact sheets, presentations, maps, and diagrams
•        Participate in regular staff calls and meetings
•        Lead AWWIC working groups
•        Additional tasks as assigned and as time permits

Qualifications.  We are seeking applicants with the following qualifications:

• M.S. in Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Environmental Science or a related field or equivalent work experience
• Strong data manipulation, management, and QA/QC skills; working knowledge of PostgreSQL, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Access
•  Strong organizational skills, project management skills, and attention to detail
•  Good writing and oral communication skills
•  Specific knowledge and experience in wind energy and/or avian and bat biology is strongly preferred
• Working knowledge of ArcGIS; statistical programs such as R, Stata, SAS, or SPSS; and HTML or PHP is not required, but considered a plus
• Desire to work in a collaborative environment to achieve goals of a diverse stakeholder community

Location, Compensation, and Benefits

I'm a 2012 ENSP grad (Conservation Bio) and currently work as research analyst at the Environmental Integrity Project.  We're a non-profit organization based in DC that focuses on protecting the environment and reducing pollution by improving compliance, investigating violations and making such information available to the public, and representing communities being overburdened with the adverse effects of toxic pollution.

Organization for Bat Conservation

Overview:  The Organization for Bat Conservation (OBC) is a nonprofit environmental education organization dedicated to educating and inspiring people to actively save bats. At the Bat Zone—our home base at Cranbrook Institute of Science—we care for more than 150 bats from around the world as well as owls, flying squirrels, sugar gliders, skunks and a two-toed sloth. We bring our animal ambassadors to schools, libraries and museums, allowing people to see these amazing animals up close and learn ways to protect them. 

OBC is a fast-growing nonprofit with national reach. Through its live animal programs, Bat Zone tours, traveling exhibit, and Save the Bats campaign, OBC reaches roughly 250,000 each year, activating kids and adults to become involved in bat conservation. 

Education Specialist Position:  OBC is seeking a full-time Education Specialist to join its education department in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. This is an exciting opportunity for a professional with a drive to teach and inspire the public to make an impact on the health of the environment. Overview:

•           Deliver high-quality, professional live animal programs and tours of the Bat Zone, throughout Michigan 

•           Develop and implement educational programming

•           Create conservation-based, high quality, innovative, informal education presentations for onsite, offsite and community-based outreach

•           Develop and implement evaluation tools to measure, interpret, and analyze the outcomes of education and conservation programming relative to strategic goals

•           Work with the Conservation Programming Director to develop and evaluate new and existing educational programming aligned with state and national science standards, the organization’s mission, and leading teaching methodology

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

•           Conduct education classes, tours, lectures and special events as needed

•           Plan, research and write grade appropriate instructional materials

•           Research, develop, implement, present/deliver, and evaluate conservation presentations

•           Provide information for and incorporate content from OBC’s Save the Bats Campaign into programs and activities

•           Develop educational content, including preparing and distributing newsletters, articles, social media content and informative brochures, developing displays, exhibits, and curriculum on wildlife conservation

•           Assist in the scheduling of programs as needed

•           Assist with animal handling training

•           Create and maintain educational displays including Bat Festival displays

•           Develop educational content for newsletter/social media/website as needed

Required qualifications

•           Bachelors and 2+ years in environmental education, interpretation, recreation, natural resources, education or related field

•           Previous experience working with live animals is a must

•           Strong writing skills

•           Ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences, demonstrated public speaking skills and ability to communicate with enthusiasm

•           Ability to work quickly and efficiently and be flexible and adaptable on a daily basis

•           Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends

•           Ability to travel throughout Michigan to present programs (OBC vehicle provided) with some long hours and occasional overnights

•           Computer literacy
