Job opportunities - Green Infrastructure and JEDI Americorps Vista

Rock Creek Conservancy, a non-profit watershed organization protecting Rock Creek (Montgomery Co, MD & Washington, D.C.) is currently hiring for several positions:

 

JEDI Americorps Vista -  The JEDI AmeriCorps VISTA member will develop and implement programs to engage diverse communities in environmental stewardship of the Rock Creek watershed, focusing on the east side of Rock Creek (National) Park, with its historically less equitable park access. The VISTA will support a suite of programming options to engage diverse communities in the Rock Creek watershed, including service and restoration work, virtual historical programming, and community events to foster deeper connections to Rock Creek's parklands as a natural oasis in the Washington DC region.

 

Green Infrastructure Technician -  RCC is seeking full-time Technicians to work on the Downspout Disconnection Program and green infrastructure maintenance. Technicians will inspect, document, and maintain green infrastructure facilities including rain gardens, bioswales, and conservation landscaping. In evenings and Saturday, technicians will canvass homes to educate residents about the Downspout DIsconnection program, document and audit homes for program eligibility, and disconnect downspouts and install rain barrels.

Project Associate - Environmental Council of the States

The Environmental Council of the States (ECOS) (www.ecos.org) is accepting applications for a Project Associate to work with senior staff and state representatives on projects and committees related to chemicals management, water quality, and other work as needed at the organization. 

About ECOS
ECOS is the national non-profit, non-partisan association of state and territorial environmental leaders. The purpose of ECOS is to improve the environmental capabilities of state environmental agencies and their leaders to protect and improve human health and the environment of the United States. To facilitate that, ECOS staff work with state environmental directors to champion the role of states, provide for the exchange of ideas, foster cooperation and coordination, and articulate state positions to federal agencies, Congress, and the public. 

Job Description
The Project Associate has a dynamic work portfolio. The Project Associate works with state environmental directors and their staff, other ECOS staff, and representatives of federal agencies to support the association’s work. Primary responsibilities include: 

  • Staffing conference calls, taking notes, and organizing committee and workgroup activities 
  • Managing projects, meetings, webinars, and other initiatives 
  • Assisting states in sharing best practices regarding agency operations and other topics 
  • Contributing to other ECOS-wide projects as necessary 

Salary for this position is dependent upon qualifications and ranges from $42,000 to $50,000. Competitive benefits are also provided. This is a full time, non-exempt position based in Washington, DC but currently working remotely due to the pandemic. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree. 
  • Excellent internal and external oral and written communication and organization skills.
  • Ability to work independently on project work and as a team member with colleagues on broader issues. 
  • High degree of personal accountability, professionalism, and motivation.  Ability to work on many projects simultaneously and to prioritize tasks. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • One to two years professional experience.
  •  Experience working on environmental issues preferred. 
  •  Knowledge of state environmental programs a plus.

Research Intern, Urban Wildlife Institute

The Urban Wildlife Institute Research intern will gain valuable virtual and hands-on experience by assisting the Urban Wildlife Institute with several field research projects both on the zoo grounds and in the Greater Chicago area. Zoo-based field work will largely be related to monitoring the largest colony of state-endangered Black-crowned night herons in Illinois, which nest at the Pritzker Family Children’s Zoo. This position will also conduct fieldwork in the Greater Chicago area (transportation provided) on projects related to biodiversity monitoring using cameras and acoustic monitors, as well as projects related to health and stress of urban wildlife, including bird mist-netting, tick surveys, and rat habitat monitoring. The intern will enter the data associated with these projects and maintain related research equipment. Some virtual work will be likely, and these projects may include tagging and analyzing images from wildlife cameras, uploading and entering field-collected data, as well as literature searches. The intern will have an opportunity to design and execute a unique project of interest provided the essential job functions are met. In addition to scientific monitoring, you will gain experience communicating the importance of urban nature by interacting with people of various ages, backgrounds and knowledge levels, and will gain experience training other interns and volunteers. The intern should be self-motivated, adaptable, and enthusiastic to work both in the field and in front of a computer, as in-person opportunities will be subject to current COVID-19 protocols, and some independent, virtual work is expected. This position requires accessing areas that are off trail on uneven terrain, through sometimes thick vegetation, and being outdoors in all weather conditions. Must be able to transport equipment of up to 20 lbs from the vehicle to field site at times off pathways and over uneven terrain. This is a year-long full-time paid position that begins March 2022.

The technician is an integral member of a team responsible for ecological management of 700+ acres of diverse habitats in a Pennsylvania Piedmont landscape. Longwood’s Land Stewardship and Ecology program advances land stewardship and ecological science in a botanical garden setting with unique opportunities for public engagement. All members of the team perform daily stewardship activities in a variety of terrain and weather conditions including planting native trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants; weeding and maintenance of native planting beds; managing invasive species using manual, mechanical, and herbicide techniques; and trail maintenance.  Other responsibilities include developing projects and coordinating with the rest of the team to complete them; taking a leading role in scientific data collection, management, and reporting; communicating with the public; and training and mentoring volunteers and students in land stewardship techniques. The Assistant Ecology Technician also participates in scientific data collection, assists with wildlife management, and trains and mentors volunteers and students in land stewardship techniques. Land Stewardship and Ecology Intern

 

The Land Stewardship and Ecology Intern is immersed in both the practice of land stewardship and the science of ecology, learning from varied experiences that range from restoration of native plant communities and scientific data collection to GIS mapping and wildlife management.

 

The intern supports Longwood’s Land Stewardship and Ecology team in the management of 700+ diverse acres of forests, meadows, wetlands, streams, ponds, and agricultural lands in a southeastern Pennsylvania Piedmont landscape, including the 86-acre Meadow Garden. All members of the team perform daily stewardship activities such as planting, meadow mowing, trail maintenance, and invasive species management. The intern also helps to advance scientific research in ecology and test innovative land stewardship practices. Responsibilities may include collecting and analyzing field, archival, and greenhouse data; reviewing and reporting on current scientific literature and historical information; creating and revising plans and GIS maps; engaging with volunteers; and participating in educational programs related to land stewardship. Self-motivation, a high degree of organization, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and with a team are essential. The ability to lift 50 lbs., willingness to work in adverse weather conditions, and a valid driver's license are required. The intern must have or obtain a PA pesticide applicator’s license and will likely apply chemical herbicides, with an emphasis on personal safety and minimum impact. Applicants must have or be actively working toward a bachelor’s degree in ecology, botany, wildlife biology, environmental science, or a related discipline, along with a passion for land stewardship and conservation.
