Environmental Specialist

Job overview:
The incumbent will serve as an Environmental Specialist within the Environmental Affairs Unit of the University of Maryland’s (UMD) Department of Environmental Safety, Sustainability, and Risk (ESSR).

The position is responsible for the development and implementation of environmental programs, supporting the Assistant Director of Environmental Affairs.

Under direct supervision by the Assistant Director, this position assists in the management and compliance assurance of UMD’s air and stormwater permits, as well as provides support to other programs including pollution prevention and hazardous, radioactive, and biological waste management.

The position develops and delivers environmental compliance training programs to campus stakeholders, develops public participation events, and maintains the web content for the Environmental Affairs Unit website.

The incumbent will interface with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), as well as other regulatory entities and stakeholders, representing UMD.

The position requires the ability to perform professional environmental management work, with direct supervision from the Assistant Director of Environmental Affairs.

Work includes technical environmental and engineering tasks, as well as project management.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES:
The incumbent performs highly specialized, complex environmental management functions which involve the review and interpretation of complicated environmental regulations, as well as data acquisition, data analysis, and the completion of multi-faceted environmental engineering calculations.

In addition to typical office work, duties will involve the acquisition of data from the field, including water monitoring, sample collection, and air emissions testing.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:
The incumbent uses and is responsible for equipment incident to the operation and function of the office including vehicles, technical monitoring and testing equipment and office equipment, with an estimated value of $200,000.

The position may assist in managing project budgets on the order of approximately $100,000 annually.

GUIDELINES:
The incumbent is required to be proficient in environmental management with detailed knowledge of pertinent Federal and State of Maryland environmental regulations, policies, and directives.

Requires broad knowledge of multi-media environmental programs, including hazardous waste, stormwater, air, and pollution prevention.

PERSONNEL CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACT:
The majority of contacts are made with faculty, staff, and laboratory personnel during consultation, inspections, audits and data collection efforts.

The position serves on project teams associated with campus construction, development and environmental compliance matters.

The incumbent will routinely interact with representatives of EPA, MDE, and other regulatory entities. Contact may be in-person, as well as through email and telephone correspondence.
