The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural resources is responsible for managing 2.2 million acres of state forest by advocating and promoting forest conservation, preventing and suppressing wildfires, and protecting the forest from destructive insects and diseases.

Land Stewardship and Ecology Technician

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time Land Stewardship and Ecology Technician working in the Research and Conservation Division of the Horticulture Department, helping to maintain Longwood’s natural resources in an ecologically sound manner.

Responsibilities include a full range of land management duties in a variety of terrain and weather conditions, including the planting of native trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants; maintenance of formal native planting beds; weeding and managing invasive species using hand, equipment and herbicide techniques; trail maintenance; ecological monitoring and management; and ecosystem restoration. This individual will also train and mentor students and volunteers on best management practices required to maintain Longwood’s natural resources and ecosystems. Occasional weekend, evening and holiday work is required.

Candidates must have a thorough knowledge of natural land stewardship and a degree in Biology, Ecology, Wildlife and/or Natural Resource Management, Horticulture, or related discipline. Three years of land stewardship experience is preferred and candidates with master’s degrees are encouraged to apply. Preferred candidates will have ecological gardening experience and be well versed in plant and wildlife identification. Strong organizational and computer skills, the ability to communicate and work effectively with a broad range of people and to complete work in a timely manner are required. Must have a valid driver’s license, basic equipment operation skills and be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s license.

Chesapeake Watershed Forester position

Arborist Assistant/Ground-worker

Wilmington Country Club, a prestigious and private club is seeking a Ground Worker with some arboricultural or horticultural experience. Pruning knowledge is a plus as well as safe chain-saw use. The Assistant will be trained under the direction of the I.S.A. Certified Arborist. Climbing experience is not needed.
 
The following are some of the duties that will be performed and instructed:

• Chain saw use and maintenance
• Woody plant ID
• IPM scouting, pest and disease management
• Proper pruning techniques
• Tree removals
• Maintaining tree nursery
• Proper planting and large tree moving
• Maintaining fruit tree orchard
• Operation of wood chipper, 50’ lift and associated tree equipment
• Roping and rigging
• Soil sampling and fertilization of woody ornamentals

Naturalist position
City of Rockville

The City of Rockville is now hiring an hourly Natural Position with the Department of Recreation and Parks.

Essential Job Functions: Work is performed under the direction of the Nature Center Supervisor. Assists in opening and closing duties of the Nature Center. Works flexible hours including weekends on a rotating schedule. Conduct environmental interpretive programs, including pre and post-trip lesson plans for school programs. Assists with animal care, bulletin board design and construction, gardening, exhibit design and fabrication. Answers inquiries and provides information to general public and program participants in an effective and pleasant manner. Works 8-15 hours per week. Will be required to teach 2-3 summer camps.
