Montgomery Parks, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission, is hosting two paid, part-time seasonal employment opportunities based in the Wheaton Headquarters located at 2425 Reedie Drive, Wheaton, MD 20902.

Candidates eager to monitor stream health and protect waterways from pollution will work alongside specialists in the Resource Analysis section to implement a variety of biological monitoring, ecological restoration, stormwater management, and GIS projects.

Position 1 - Resource Analysis Program Assistant (Technician): March 2024 – October 2024

Position 2 - Resource Analysis Program Assistant (Summer Internship): May 2024 – August 2024

Positions average 24-32 hours per week, scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and involve considerable time outdoors collecting data in streams and wetlands and along stormwater infrastructure. Candidates will receive specialized training and work to grow skills conducting water quality assessments and pollution investigations, processing biological samples, calibrating and maintaining equipment, reviewing and analyzing datasets, and communicating results to an array of audiences.

6-month Biological Field Crew Positions

Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is seeking volunteers for the biological program at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge from late July, 2020 to mid-January 2021. The biological program focuses on controlling and removing non-native species and to maintain, conserve, and restore quality habitat to meet the needs of indigenous plants, seabirds, water birds, monk seals, and sea turtles. In addition to being a National Wildlife Refuge, Midway Atoll is also designated as the Battle of Midway National Memorial and is part of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. Midway Atoll is a remote field site located over 1,300 miles from the main Hawaiian Islands and is inhabited by a small community of ~50 residents comprising FWS staff, volunteers, and contractors.

Temp video/acoustic technicians

Bat Conservation International

Bat Conservation International (www.batcon.org) is seeking qualified candidates to serve as video/acoustic technicians from approximately 1 June through 30 October 2020. Generally, technicians will be responsible for deploying and maintaining thermal video cameras and acoustic detectors in the field, organizing and managing video and acoustic files, and use of advanced video analysis software (2-D and 3-D) to post-process video files using established protocols. Pay rate is $15/hour plus housing, utilities, internet, and vehicles provided. We will provide work computers, hardware, and software for the duration of employment

Successful Applicants Will:

• Deploy, maintain, and, if necessary, troubleshoot video and acoustic equipment in a field setting to ensure continued operation and data collection
• Download, review, and format video and acoustic data
• Coordinate acoustic and video data collection with members of a research team
• Tabulate and manage large volumes of imagery data
• Transfer data and communicate effectively with remote staff
• Collect detailed field measurements necessary for 3-D calibration
• Analyze, review, and interpret thermal video data using established 2-D and 3-D video techniques
• Regularly submit progress reports

Qualifications:

• A Bachelor’s degree (preferred degree in biology, ecology, wildlife management or a related discipline)
• Strong technological knowledge
• Strong organization skills
• Good attention to detail
• Be willing and capable of conducting field work in moderately rugged terrain under physically demanding conditions (e.g., hot temperatures, venomous snakes, biting insects, etc.) during atypical hours
• Experience deploying, managing, and troubleshooting video and/or acoustic equipment
• Live and work well with a research team
• Preferred experience working with video imagery and analysis software (e.g., Matlab)
• Possess a valid driver’s license
• Pass a background check (conducted before hiring is complete)
• Ability to work with minimal supervision

Seasonal Tech Position

Brown Environmental 13

Brown Environmental 13 is seeking qualified applicants to fill a seasonal technician position for spring and summer 2020. The applicant should have field experience and the necessary skills to manage bat acoustic surveys, manage data, and run acoustic analysis software programs. There will be opportunities to assist with mist net, tracking, and cave surveys. This is a temporary position; however, there is potential for an extension into fall surveys.

Job Description:

Applicants can expect to work long days with constant travel. This position requires lifting heavy equipment, working and hiking in challenging environments, rugged and uneven terrain. Daily duties include hiking equipment into remote sample sites, setting up acoustic equipment, data management and preliminary software analysis, and assisting with mist net, tracking, camera and cave surveys.

Minimum Qualifications:
➢ One year or more experience of setting up and managing bat acoustic surveys
➢ Experience with managing acoustic data and running preliminary software analysis
➢ Willing to travel for extended amounts of time
➢ Available for survey season April 14 – August 30. Start date negotiable.
➢ Good communication skills, concise data documentation, detail oriented, well organized,
self-motivated, positive attitude, professionalism, and a team member.
➢ Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
➢ Experience with GPS and hiking into remote locations with steep terrain
➢ Possess a valid driver’s license and good driving record

➢ Not required: mist net and tracking experience a plus

Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Location: Office based in Cary, North Carolina, travel throughout southeast.
