Natural Resources Technician I - Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MULTIPLE VACANCIES) 

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Monitoring and Non-Tidal Assessment Division (MANTA) is currently accepting applications for multiple seasonal Natural Resources Technician I positions. The selected candidates may assist with the collection of water quality, biological, and habitat data in both tidal and non-tidal rivers of Maryland, the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland’s Coastal Bays and Deep Creek Lake.

Primary duties include collecting water quality samples, measuring stream and storm flow, surveying for freshwater mussels, compiling and entering monitoring data to assist with reporting. Sampling may be conducted from boats, bridges, piers and within streams. Duties may also include maintaining and calibrating water quality sampling equipment, preparation of sampling/ laboratory supplies, maintenance of aquaculture systems, conducting data verification and analysis, delivery of samples to the laboratory and other duties as assigned.

Natural Resource Specialist II (Biological/Geomorphic Lead) - Baltimore County Department of
Environmental Protection and Sustainability

Under general supervision, this position performs professional management of watershed monitoring programs pertaining to NPDES MS4 and TMDL required monitoring through fieldwork, investigations, data analysis and report preparation. They may assign and review the work of subordinate personnel or act as a project manager.
- Performs complex environmental and natural resources research pertaining to water quality, compiles detailed information, makes analysis, and prepares reports on environmental issues, areas, and problems.
- Completes preliminary studies of difficult environmental problems associated with water quality issues.
- Monitors and reports water quality issues of difficult complexity for compliance with County and Stat  laws and regulations regarding the protection of natural resources, including watercourses, wetlands, water pollution, aquatic habitats, rare and endangered species, agriculture, forests, and wildlife habitats.
- Conducts field investigation surveys of watercourses, private and public infrastructure, wetlands, forests, and wildlife habitats.
- Investigates and recommends corrective or mitigating actions for degraded streams and wetlands.

Job Description:  

The mission of the Water & Science Administration of the Maryland Department of the Environment is to restore and maintain the quality of the State's ground and surface waters, protect wetland habitats and manage the utilization of Maryland's mineral resources throughout the State of Maryland. The Natural Resources Planner (NRP) is responsible for the management and implementation of laws, regulations and programs that restore and maintain the quality of surface waters and the protection of tidal wetland habitats and waterways.

This position functions as a wetland reviewer for designated counties in the Western and/or Eastern Regions of the Tidal Wetlands Division of the Water & Science Administration within the Department of the Environment. This position is guided by the requirements and mandates established in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 26, Subtitle 24, Tidal Wetlands Regulations; Code of Public General Laws of Maryland Title 16 Wetlands and Riparian Rights and the Water Quality Certification requirements of the Water Quality Regulations. In this capacity, the incumbent renders permit decisions, represents the Department in a variety of forums, makes recommendations on program development and planning projects, and is responsible for educating and coordinating with other government agencies, other levels of government and the general public.

 The Policy Analyst will provide support for the Policy Division within the Climate Change Program. The Climate Change Program is responsible for developing and implementing nation-leading policies to reduce and sequester greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Our work improves the health and welfare of people and the environment while developing a dynamic clean energy economy in Maryland. The Policy Division activities include supporting the implementation of  the Climate Solutions Now Act (CSNA), participating in the U.S. Climate Alliance, and providing policy staff support for the Maryland Commission on Climate Change. POSITION DESCRIPTION: Position is responsible for data collection for several field projects on endangered Florida bonneted bats (Eumops floridanus) and other bat species in South Florida. This research aims to assess the effects of large-scale hydrological restoration of wetlands, characterize roost and foraging habitat preferences, track movement patterns, and refine methods used to study Florida bonneted bats. The results of these studies will directly inform management and conservation strategies for this rare and federally endangered species and contribute to an understanding of bat community response to ecological restoration efforts. Position will work in several protected areas in south Florida including: Picayune Strand State Forest, Babcock-Webb Wildlife Management Area, Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, Big Cypress National Preserve, Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, Collier-Seminole State Park, and Avon Park Air Force Range. Use of a 4wd vehicle, ATV/UTV, swamp buggy and/or kayak will be necessary to access remote sites, in addition to access by foot.  Data collection is the primary duty, but opportunities may exist for well-qualified persons to contribute to study design, initiate additional research, analyze data, and contribute to internal reports and peer-reviewed publications.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Position is responsible for working with the project principal investigator, a master’s student and other project biologists to: 1- deploy acoustic bat detectors and analyze acoustic data, 2 - capture bats with mist nets, 3 – locate bat roosts via ground and aerial radio-telemetry, 4 – conduct vegetation surveys, 5 – count bats at roosts, and 6 - collect wing biopsies for genetic analysis.  Position is also responsible for recording and compiling all data collected and providing written updates on research progress as directed. Applicants must be able to carry-out extensive field work in forested and wetland conditions in south Florida. Must be physically fit and comfortable hiking and working in hot, wet and potentially inclement weather, alone or with a team. Experience in bat capture/handling, acoustic analysis, plant species identification, and/or conducting field-work on other species in S. Florida is desired. Experience with MS Excel is required. Applicants should have strong organizational and communication skills.

The Maryland Geological Survey is searching for a candidate who will study the groundwater resources of Maryland. We are looking for an early career candidate who has either at least one year of experience performing hydrogeological studies or a master's degree in hydrology. The Maryland Geological Survey is a State government organization of 17 scientific staff and 2 support staff. We have a great diversity of projects from ocean sand resources mapping to traditional geologic mapping to mineral mapping, and of course, for this position groundwater quantity and quality mapping and analysis.

The main purpose of this position is to assist in hydrogeological and hydrological studies of the groundwater and surface-water resources of the State. Duties will include field and office work, and may include but are not limited to measuring water levels in wells, monitoring test drilling, collecting and describing drill cuttings and cores, conducting and analyzing aquifer tests, inventorying wells, collecting water samples, analyzing water-quality, water-level, and other hydrogeological data, working with GIS applications, digitizing and scanning data, compiling tables and plots of groundwater levels and water quality, and assisting in the production of reports, pamphlets, and brochures for both technical and non-technical audiences. The position involves interacting with technical professionals at local, state, and federal agencies as well as the public. Field work often requires travel throughout the State and may require the ability to lift heavy equipment (exceeding 50 pounds).

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife & Heritage Service is currently accepting applications for one full-time and one part-time Seasonal Contractual position (Natural Resources Technician III). The Department seeks two highly motivated individuals to assist with a project to test a rapid assessment protocol for characterizing stream-associated wetland habitats and providing information on their condition. Field work will take place in southern Maryland (Anne Arundel, Prince George's, Calvert, and Charles counties). Job duties will include (1) collection of data on dominant woody and herbaceous vegetation (vegetation composition, structure, percent cover), physical site characteristics (including hydrology and soils), and stressors (including invasive plant species) at a variety of sites in the project area; (2) use of existing GIS data layers to characterize landscape condition and other measures relevant to habitat condition; and (3) assistance with data entry, data summary, landowner/land manager contacts, and equipment maintenance in support of the field work. Expect occasional long field days with varied weather conditions and biting insects. May need to use own vehicle.

Candidates must have a strong work ethic, good problem-solving skills, and the ability to work well independently and in a small team in remote areas with minimal supervision. Candidates must also have the ability to identify dominant herbaceous and woody vegetation of riparian wetland systems in the mid-Atlantic region, including associated uplands. Experience with ArcMap and handheld GPS units is required.
