Several Job Openings at USDA Beltsville

The Environmental Microbial and Food Safety Laboratory (EMFSL) in Beltsville Maryland has several paid job openings for those interested in either biological and chemical analysis of water quality and/or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) based imaging of surface water. The specific project goals associated with this position are 1) identifying spatial and temporal dynamics of E. coli and phytoplankton in irrigation water sources 2) improve monitoring design methods by determining the most effective sampling locations, and 3) to identify environmental water parameters which will expedite the assessment of microbial water quality through the development of predictive models all of which include an aim to reduce the incidences of foodborne illnesses. The prospective candidate should be a recent graduate or master’s student with education in environmental or agricultural sciences, biology, chemistry, hydrology, or a related field. The biological science technician position will include a mix of laboratory, field, and data entry and analysis work. Ideal candidates will have some or all the following skills:

• Nutrient analysis of water or soil samples using ion selective probes and/or discrete benchtop analyzers for carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous containing molecules
• Microbiological techniques including aseptic technique, pipetting, direct plating or membrane filtration onto agars, Colilert methods, DNA extractions, and PCR.
• Operation of in-situ water quality sensors for parameters including temperature, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen
• Basic statistical coursework, experience with excel, and preferably some experience with programming languages including R and Python.
• Experience with operating UAVs for imagery
• Aerial image analysis
  
  

Onsite training of the above skills will be performed and/or strengthened and can be tailored to specifics long-term interests of the hired individuals. The position would be full time (up to 40 hours a week) for recent graduates and can be flexible for master’s students depending on course obligations and ongoing research requirements. This contractor position may be extended for several years.

National Coral Management Fellowship
Position Announcements 2018-2020

The National Coral Reef Management Fellowship Program is a partnership between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coral Reef Conservation Program, the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs, the U.S. All Islands Coral Reef Committee and Nova Southeastern University’s Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography. The program seeks to build the next generation of coral reef conservation leaders and supports two-year positions that strive to address current capacity gaps, as well as build long-term management capacity in the jurisdictions by placing highly qualified individuals whose education and work experience meet each jurisdiction’s specific coral reef management needs.

The seven jurisdictions where fellows will be placed include: the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Florida, Hawai'i, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and American Samoa. The start date for the two-year positions is January 2018.

Each position has its own distinct work plan specific to jurisdiction management needs and provides training and professional development opportunities. Project work will focus on climate change, land-based sources of pollution and fishing impacts to coral reef cosystems. Fellows may also work to address local needs such as the development of management plans for marine managed areas, engagement of stakeholders in resource management, and development of climate change adaptation plans.

The USFWS West Virginia Field Office located in Elkins, WV, is looking for a creative, self-motivated individual to support the development and growth of environmental education in our region. This position will assist the Endangered Species Program with education and outreach events, and other habitat conservation activities. Our organization believes that taking the time to introduce both children and adults to nature, and to educate them about the wonders of the environment they live in, allows them to develop a sense of place and an understanding of the natural world that will continue to teach and inspire them for a lifetime.

Duties include planning and implementing events, partnerships and collaboration, newsletters, blogs, social media, speaking at schools, and ...did we mention events? Other duties may include some hands on river clean ups, non-native invasive species control, and field monitoring. Educational programming will focus on threatened and endangered species of WV and non-native invasive species. This includes a diversity of endangered species such as our charismatic cave-dwelling bats, surprisingly-fascinating freshwater mussels, crayfish, plants, salamanders, and more! Other projects and tasks may be included, depending on the specific interests of the AmeriCorps member. This member will be encouraged to work with other agencies and organizations (such as the Forest Service, Refuges, local schools, etc.) to develop projects. Opportunities for professional development and networking are also encouraged and supported. Navy Pathways Intern Program

This program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed. Students can work full-time or part-time as temporary or non-temporary interns. Students must be continuously enrolled on at least a half-time basis at a qualifying educational institution and be at least 16 years of age. Student interns on appointments scheduled to last longer than 90 days will earn 4 hours of annual leave and 4 hours of sick leave each pay period.

Duties:

 

The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.

 

The duties may include, but are not limited to:

• The incumbent provides technical assistance and conducts wildlife damage management activities in an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to prevent or reduce economic loss to property and agriculture or to protect human health and safety.
• Incumbent monitors wildlife behavior and abundance on airports and surrounding properties and may collect data for formal Wildlife Hazard Assessments at the airport and surrounding environment.
• Incumbent will be required to be familiar with and to use various devices, tools, firearms, toxicants, and related equipment used in wildlife damage management.
• Incumbent will be expected to be able to identify damage from wildlife species as it pertains to airports, and the incumbent will be expected to assist in the implementation of appropriate corrective action, if warranted.
• The incumbent complies with federal, state, and local regulations and assists airports with compliance with the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA), Endangered Species Act, Federal Air Regulations, and Department of Defense Regulations. The incumbent assists airports and other customers with obtaining migratory bird depredation permits.
• Incumbent will keep accurate written records of their activities for the cooperator and Wildlife Services program using prescribed formats and procedures. Incumbent prepares and submits routine and special reports regarding daily, weekly, or monthly activities, observations, and events.
• The incumbent participates in required training sessions, on-the-job developmental activities and temporary details.
• Incumbent presents program information and conducts training for various groups, including airport organizations, educational institutions, industry groups, and state extension programs.
