Organization for Bat Conservation
Overview: The Organization for Bat Conservation (OBC) is a nonprofit
environmental education organization dedicated to educating and inspiring
people to actively save bats. At the Bat Zone—our home base at Cranbrook
Institute of Science—we care for more than 150 bats from around the world as
well as owls, flying squirrels, sugar gliders, skunks and a two-toed sloth. We
bring our animal ambassadors to schools, libraries and museums, allowing people
to see these amazing animals up close and learn ways to protect them.
OBC is a fast-growing nonprofit with national reach. Through
its live animal programs, Bat Zone tours, traveling exhibit, and Save the Bats
campaign, OBC reaches roughly 250,000 each year, activating kids and adults to
become involved in bat conservation.
Education Specialist Position: OBC is seeking a full-time Education Specialist to join its
education department in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. This is an exciting
opportunity for a professional with a drive to teach and inspire the public to
make an impact on the health of the environment. The ideal candidate will be an
energetic and enthusiastic education professional who thrives in a fast-paced,
environment surrounded by equally dynamic colleagues and volunteers. Salary is
commensurate with experience and includes a benefits package.
Overview:
•
Deliver high-quality, professional live animal programs and tours of the Bat
Zone, throughout Michigan
•
Develop and implement educational programming
•
Create conservation-based, high quality, innovative, informal education
presentations for onsite, offsite and community-based outreach
•
Develop and implement evaluation tools to measure, interpret, and analyze the
outcomes of education and conservation programming relative to strategic goals
•
Work with the Conservation Programming Director to develop and evaluate new and
existing educational programming aligned with state and national science
standards, the organization’s mission, and leading teaching methodology
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
•
Conduct education classes, tours, lectures and special events as needed
•
Plan, research and write grade appropriate instructional materials
•
Research, develop, implement, present/deliver, and evaluate conservation
presentations
•
Provide information for and incorporate content from OBC’s Save the Bats
Campaign into programs and activities
•
Develop educational content, including preparing and distributing newsletters,
articles, social media content and informative brochures, developing displays,
exhibits, and curriculum on wildlife conservation
•
Assist in the scheduling of programs as needed
•
Assist with animal handling training
•
Create and maintain educational displays including Bat Festival displays
•
Develop educational content for newsletter/social media/website as needed
Required qualifications
•
Bachelors and 2+ years in environmental education, interpretation, recreation,
natural resources, education or related field
•
Previous experience working with live animals is a must
•
Strong writing skills
•
Ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences, demonstrated public
speaking skills and ability to communicate with enthusiasm
•
Ability to work quickly and efficiently and be flexible and adaptable on a
daily basis
•
Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends
•
Ability to travel throughout Michigan to present programs (OBC vehicle
provided) with some long hours and occasional overnights
•
Computer literacy
