Overview

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is currently recruiting for two Wildlife Program Managers.  One position may focus on species that are hunted and trapped and the other on species diversity projects that include Natural Heritage Inventory, threatened and endangered species, nongame wildlife, plants, and natural communities.  These are excellent opportunities to make a difference in a small state where you will be involved in all facets of wildlife research, management, and wildlife habitat protection.  The job involves overseeing wildlife research and management projects, supervising and mentoring from 6 to 10 wildlife biologists, developing plans and policies, managing budgets, coordinating grant management and reporting, making programmatic decisions, and doing hands-on fieldwork.  These positions are full-time permanent, with the work location at either the Department's headquarter office in Montpelier, Vermont or in a district office. District offices are located in Essex, St. Johnsbury, Barre, Rutland, and Springfield.

Responsibilities include:
 

• Oversees a number of wildlife division programs including providing staff supervision and training, establishing research and project priorities, coordinating research and management programs, and evaluating program accomplishments.
• Recommends long-term wildlife management programs and activities.
• Participates in the development of Department strategic and operational plans to achieve goals and outcomes.
• Sets goals and identifies priorities for a number of species teams.
• Directs the preparation of plans for the management and conservation of species, and habitats.
• Reviews the work of biologists assigned in their program in the preparation and implementation of wildlife management activities and plans, disease monitoring, land acquisition, habitat protection, and environmental review activities. 
• Interprets federal and state legislation and assists in establishing rules, regulations, policies, and schedules.
• Prepares, administers, and monitors specific project budgets.
• Prepares grant proposals and monitors spending of various grants.
• Evaluates and recommends proposed legislation.
• Participates in meetings with agency, state, and federal officials and with private organizations on wildlife management, habitat protection, and landscape ecology.
• Conducts fieldwork including wildlife sampling, habitat assessment, and regulatory review. 
• Presents expert testimony for the Department in a variety of forums.
• Responds to information requests from state and federal agencies, private organizations, and the public.
• Works closely with the Division Director and other Program Managers as an administrative team for the Wildlife Division to ensure collaboration and coordination of all Division programs.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed primarily in a standard office setting. Occasional field work and attendance at public meetings require that private means of transportation be available. Some work outside of normal office hours may be required. Interaction may be anticipated with individuals and groups expressing strong dissent from and hostility to Department programs and policies.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, wildlife management, or a closely related biological field AND Five (5) years at a professional level in a wildlife management program, including or supplemented by two (2) years of administrative or supervisory responsibilities.
OR
Master's degree in wildlife biology, wildlife management, or a closely related biological field AND three (3) years at a professional level in a wildlife management program, including or supplemented by two (2) years of administrative or supervisory responsibilities.
OR
Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, wildlife management, or a closely related biological field AND Master's degree in Public Administration AND Five (5) years at a professional level in a wildlife management program, including or supplemented by one (1) year of administrative or supervisory responsibilities.
OR
Master's degree in wildlife biology, wildlife management, or a closely related biological field AND Master's degree in Public Administration AND  three (3) years at a professional level in a wildlife management program, including or supplemented by one (1) year of administrative or supervisory responsibilities.
